Techland has released a brand new video showing a massive chunk of gameplay from the upcoming first-person zombie survival game Dying Light.

Dying Light takes place in a city under siege, after a massive viral outbreak turns most of the population into bloodthirsty zombies and the army declares quarantine.

The game blends gritty survival, scavenging and a complex melee combat system with fast-paced action similar to the one in DICE's parkour-infused action-adventure game Mirror's Edge.

In addition to trying not to get killed by zombies, players will also have to follow a gripping and grim narrative but can also freely explore the fictional urban setting that Dying Light takes place in.

Polish developer Techland is also planning to deliver an impressive suit of original ideas and exciting gameplay mechanics and opportunities, delivering a familiar but fresh experience for fans of the genre and newcomers alike.

One of the gameplay systems instrumental to a satisfying survival experience is the crafting system, which the studio promised to make diverse and meaningful, enabling users to create their own makeshift weapons and booby traps.

New gameplay footage

The footage comes from the company's Twitch livestream recording from late in December last year and shows a massive 90 minutes of gameplay.

The two-man dev team, comprised of Lead Game Designer Maciej Binkowski and Producer Tymon Smektala, provides helpful commentary regarding many aspects of the game.

The gameplay is captured several hours into the game, so players get to see some of the more advanced things they'll be able to do in Dying Light, including some of the skills they will be able to learn while progressing through the massive open world.

Completing quests, being useful and coming on top in random encounters gets you experience points, which you can then turn into helpful abilities that enhance your chances of survival and open up new opportunities while out in the city.

Some technical info

Developer Techland previously worked on Dead Island, a game similar to Dying Light, and on Call of Juarez, an acclaimed spaghetti western shooter.

The game will run in 1080p resolution and at 30 frames per second on both current-gen consoles, due to the fast-paced nature of the action, which mandates a stable frame rate. The team took the decision to cap the frame rate in order to reduce input lag to the minimum and offer a smooth gameplay performance.

The low frame rate also means that Techland will be able to deliver the native 1080p visuals more easily, which, given the scope of the project and the tech behind it, is somewhat of a feat. The game uses a specially crafted Natural Movement system in order to enable players to traverse its sprawling urban environments, allowing users to climb buildings and jump between rooftops at will.

The game is scheduled to come out on January 27 in North America and January 30 in Europe, headed to the Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Pre-orders for the game are open on the Dying Light website.
