That's the sum spent by the government on new certificates

Last year, when the world found out that the DigiNotar had been hacked, it was clear that the Dutch government would be highly affected, mainly because it procured most of its digital certificates from the company. It turns out that the damage caused by the certificate authority to state institutions rises up to $11.3 Million (€8.7 Million).

According to reports, the country’s Interior Ministry claims that the large sum of money was spent by the state on new certificates.

While the government seeks the reimbursement, it’s unlikely that the company, which filed for bankruptcy back in September 2011, still has that kind of money.

The DigiNotar incident has made a lot of certificate authorities be aware of the risks that hide behind the improper management of a crisis.

At the time of the firm’s downfall, many blamed the unwanted outcome on the fact that the organization’s representatives tried to hide the data breach.
