This has disaster written all over it. A new app called Confessiondolls allows people to create an avatar that cannot be traced back to them (or so says the developer) and make confessions that others can read and share.
Marketed as an app specifically targeted at the female population, Confessiondolls can be used as a personal electronic diary to share stories with other people.
In short, it’s a Facebook for secret confessions. Readers will have the option to 'like', share, Twitter or link them to traditional social media, according to Mediagroe.
“Stories on regular social media are all about that lovely holiday or the best discount buys. Stories on Confessiondolls are more serious, grievous and therefore much more exciting."
"This is the ultimate way to anonymously leave your secret behind in the world of social media. Nobody knows it's you,” says Stijn Groenemeijer of Mediagroe.
“People need a place where they can leave confessions behind. Especially girls, for whom it's becoming a hype,” added Groenemeijer. “They recognise themselves in other people's stories or share the same problems. Stop writing on public toilet doors and start confiding in your Confessiondoll, a personal listener and a friend in happy and difficult times.”
While the app does sound intriguing (even men enjoy a fair dose of daily gossip), one can’t help but imagine what would happen if a so-called friend managed to identify the person behind a confession doll.
Better yet, would you entrust your darkest secrets to some remote server in the middle of nowhere?
Yet, developer Mediagroe assures us that “Every public Confessiondoll remains anonymous, but can be followed by others," adding that "the App allows users to choose their favourite dolls and follow its stories.”
Confessiondolls is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad and requires iOS 4.3 or later. Download Confessiondolls for iOS (Free)
