Good news for fans of the original 1994 hit comedy “Dumb and Dumber,” starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels: not only is a sequel in the works, but it could possibly see the two make a comeback as a team to reprise their roles.

Directors of the original movie Peter and Bobby Farrelly have never made a secret of wanting to come out with a sequel to it someday. They just never seemed to find the time.

Deadline reports that, now that they're done working on “The Three Stooges,” the Farrellys' next project will most likely be a sequel to “Dumb and Dumber.”

Moreover, it seems that interest in such a project is hight, because writers have already been hired to pen a script.

“Peter and Bobby Farrelly are moving forward with another project they’ve long wanted to do: a second installment of the New Line 1994 hit Dumb and Dumber,” Deadline says.

“The intention is to bring back Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, the lovable dimwitted pals with big hearts and small brains,” adds the same e-zine.

“Sean Anders and John Morris have been hired to write the script. They […] just co-directed the Adam Sandler comedy I Hate You Dad. The hope is for the Farrelly Brothers to direct this next,” the report further says.

Deadline also points out that, while Jim Carrey never seemed much of a fan of sequels, he's dropped several hints in the past about possibly being open to the idea of returning to “Dumb and Dumber,” so this could mean at least one of the film's stars is on board.

Had New Line thought this through, the sequel could have come out years ago.

“They could have done this a long time ago, but New Line unwisely went forward with Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. Made on the cheap with lookalike actors, the movie was dreadful, but it obviously didn’t kill the franchise,” Deadline says.

No word yet whether Jeff Daniels is game for a reunion but, given that the Farrellys' “The Three Stooges” comes out early next year, chances are fans will be hearing more about the “Dumb and Dumber” sequel really soon.
