Dumb Blonde Jokes Are Men’s Defense Against Attractive Women

Men may say dumb blonde jokes because they feel threatened by an attractive woman

Jokes about how blondes have more fun but are generally rather “challenged” from an intellectual point of view seem to have been around forever. A new study comes to show that these jokes are not necessarily inspired from real life, but rather used by men as a defense mechanism when they meet attractive women to whom they might feel inferior, the Daily Mail says.

Apparently, making a dumb blonde joke helps men feel superior, thus more confident in their own strength whenever they meet an attractive woman, whose presence might make them uncomfortable for one reason or another. In a 4-page study, researchers Dr. Limor Shifman of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Dafna Lemish of the Tel Aviv University argue that the blonde stereotype perpetuated in such jokes is not grounded in real life, but rather in men’s inability to confront an attractive woman.

“The secret to the success of dumb blonde jokes, say the researchers, could be their ability to put men at ease. If men feel threatened by attractive blondes, ridiculing them makes them seem less intimidating. Alternatively, telling dumb blonde jokes may generate a sense of superiority,” the Mail writes of the findings. Given the rise in popularity of the Internet, this type of jokes is now becoming popular in parts of the world where researchers did not even expect it to appear, thus contributing to enforcing the dumb blonde stereotype.

“The stereotype is still alive and kicking in the third millennium, not only in the movies but also in contemporary advertising and prime time television. […] The blonde is flying across the globe to places in which blonde jokes have never set foot. Such places include Brazil, China, Japan and the Arab world. Blonde jokes are now becoming prevalent in Scandinavian countries such as Finland and Norway. One of the first things Finns did with their mobile phones was to use them to send jokes about blondes,” the two female researchers say of how the phenomenon is spreading.

The latest study is meant to illustrate how humor is subject to globalization by means of the Internet, by having dumb blonde jokes appear in areas where blonde is the predominant hair color.

Honestly, you can't even get the STEREOTYPE right! The joke originated in the days before hair dye, when children's hair was typical blonde before it naturally darkened during adulthood. Therefore, blonde hair symbolized physical immaturity (as in not having reached puberty)
and youth. Some evil mind twisted this up and hence, the blonde joke was born.
Hey, did you know that blonde in the only gender-sensitive word in the English language?

This blog meaningless overkill and political correctness taken to pointless extremes. * blond jokes are funny precisely because they are so meaningless. Nobody feels threatened by an attractive blond woman (at least most people don't) and nobody really thinks they are less intelligent than the remainder of the population. The only blond person whose intelligence I might worry about is someone who actually takes any of it seriously (provided they have not been abused for some other reason).

I won't say it is good clean fun. It is not exactly, is it. All prejudicial humor relies on demeaning someone for its "kick". But given the nature of our modern prejudices, I doubt these jokes are going to create a mindset where attractive blond women are denied access to employment, housing, opportunities to find significant others or career advancement. If we are going to ge rid of prejudice, we certainly have bigger fish to fry. Besides most of the * blond humor I have come across was delivered at the hands of attractive (and I am guessing not so * - they are doing better than I am) blond actresses and celebrities like Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, Reese Witherspoon, Marylnn Monroe and Suzanne Somers (Mae West was certainly a "smart blond").

Let me just close by saying that this sort of humor and whether we ought to tolerate it or laugh at or engage in it depends on one key factor. Is someone geting hurt. We know a lot of ethnic or other group specific humor is intensely hurtful, the verbal equivalent of punching someone or knowkcing them to the ground. If the targets of this humor are actually hurt by it then it is less than courteosu and while a little affectionate teasing may be allowed we need to think first and formost about how much hurt we are dishing out. If we all did that we would have a lot less rules to worry about. We will never all do anything but I suspect we could without too much effort become a decidedly more concientiously courteous and mutually respectful society without completely sacrificing our sense of humor. Are blonds offended by the jokes or do they laugh along with the rest? I am, actually, kind of curious.

The only ones laughing are the bleach blondes that the stereotype perpetuates. Nice try, but I have never heard most of these actresses say blonde jokes. Your making this up to try to continue with your ignorance. This shows me that you are a stupid brunette that wouldn't know the truth if it hit you in the face. But then again, you are a brunette.
