DNF's game engine revealed, as well as plans for a multi-format release

It's been a while since Duke Nukem Forever had the spotlight over its head, but this game was never forgotten by fans. When the teaser trailer was released, servers crashed, thousands of comments were posted and the overall hype surrounding the game proved that it would be a definite hit. And it's something 3D Realms knows for sure, since they told MCV they plan to release DNF as a multi-platform game.

"We plan to have a multi-platform release if possible. We're not nailing down a date yet, but we're excited about the game's progress", 3D Realms CEO Scott Miller said. And having in mind the fact that this game takes so long to develop (it has been already 10 years since it was announced), delays for making it a multi format game wouldn't turn fans into a happy community. But some still find the power to joke, as one user said: "I'm going to buy this game for my Playstation 6 and no mistake". Hopefully not.

In other words, 3D Realms' co-owner George Broussard had a chat with Duke's fans over at Shacknews and, even though he didn't give very concrete details, at least he said a thing or two about the next Duke Nukem game. And this is just one great thing: it can only mean that the game is getting closer.

So, among the most important informations given by Broussard, is the one regarding the engine used by the game: "Unreal. I believe we branched off somewhere around the Unreal 2 time when they added static meshes. Since then we've redone the rendering 100% and it's a fully modern engine", Broussard said.

For such a long awaited game, people expect it to actually be a long game, not one that's over after a few intense hours of gameplay. Broussard didn't give a concrete answer regarding this topic, but he said: "The game has not been one continuous game worked on. It's probably re-started 3+ times due to various issues. The current (and last) version is 2004-ish. As for game length we should be similar to competitive games in our genre". Hopefully, he doesn't mean "Prey" with that competitive thing...

Other little things we can tell you about the game are: it will have gibs flying everywhere (but in a way that makes sense, so don't expect to use a pistol and see them), environment interactivity will be a "big big" feature and they're definitely going to record "I'm gonna kill you old school" dialog line for Duke. Hopefully (I know, this is becoming an obsession of mine), he'll still sing "Born to be wild".
