Duke Nukem Forever, one of the most anticipated games of all time, has finally been dated after years of speculation over its fate.

Duke Nukem Forever was first announced back in 1997 by 3D Realms, but since then, the title was in a development limbo, popping out every few years with screenshots or brief videos showing that Duke Nukem, one of the most popular video game heroes of the 1990s, is still alive and chewing bubble gum.

Now, after the team at Gearbox Software announced that it has taken over the reigns of the project, Duke Nukem Forever has finally been dated, and will arrive on May 3, in North America, and May 6, in the rest of the world, according to a reveal made by Game Informer magazine.

“The moment fans all over the world have been waiting for is almost here,” says Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games. “May 3, 2011 marks Duke’s return as he unleashes his brash and brutally honest wit on the world. His return is going to be epic and one that will make video gaming history!”

Duke Nukem was in development for a huge amount of time, and it all seemed lost back in 2009 when it was revealed that 3D Realms, the studio behind it, was to be shut down due to financial problems.

It seemed to be the end for Duke, but the project was revived by Gearbox Software, who promised that it would see the project through and release it this year.

In order to further convince fans that the game will actually appear, Gearbox also showcased a demo of the game at the PAX East convention.

Now, Duke Nukem Forever is one step closer to becoming a reality, after all these years.

The game has been confirmed to be heading to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.
