The all time classic shooter Duke Nukem 3D is now a free download through Apple’s iTunes App Store, with no warning whatsoever from the developers of the game. Duke has seen its 3-dollar price slashed before, but only for a day (back in August). Now, it appears that the title’s price has been set at $0 indefinitely.

“With dozens of Game of the Year awards under his belt, Duke remains the King of Action. Larger than life action is what Duke is all about, mixed with humor and innovative explosive action in this 20+ hour game,” reads the app’s iTunes description.

On September 15, Duke Nukem 3D for iOS was updated to version 1.1, adding new "drag style" analog controls, with the developers noting that sensitivity is fully adjustable in the options menu, as well as support for the second-generation iPod touch with 2.2 OS and higher.

Compatibility actually starts at iPod touch 2G, and continues with iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), the iPad and, according to the requirements list, all iPhone models.

iOS 2.2 is also the minimum spec as far as operating system requirements go.

Duke Nukem 3D for iOS is (obviously) a port of the original 3D first-person-shooter originally created by the folks at 3D Realms.

Initially released on January 29, 1996 for the PC, the title was a sequel to the platform games Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II published by Apogee.

An expansion pack for Duke 3D, Plutonium Pak, was released later that year.

Duke Nukem 3D tells the story of a titular macho - Duke Nukem (voiced by Jon St. John) - who fights an alien invasion on Earth.
