The Dropbox Team has issued an announcement to all users, including free account holders, notifying them of some changes and enhancements to the Dropbox service.

Dropbox is cross-platform, meaning it works on PC and Mac. This way, you can install the software on both systems, feed Dropbox some files on one computer, and see them synced on the other one. Those files are instantly available to view, edit or do whatever you need to do with them. If you delete a file on a computer, the changes are reflected on the other. This works with more than just two machines. You can have Dropbox working for you on as many systems as you wish, including your iPhone.

The team has confirmed that it has a new policy to be instated on August 1st. “We're Changing Undo History,” the team says. As users should know, Dropbox automatically safeguards any files they delete, in case they'd like those files back. The service saves old file versions in what acts like an “undo” feature for all of one's files and folders. “Today, Dropbox keeps these deleted files and old file versions ('undo history') forever. For many people this creates clutter, and it also wastes space,” the team adds.

Well, sadly for free users, “beginning August 1st, our new policy will be to keep 30 days of undo history. If you'd like to have unlimited undo history, then you need to upgrade to one of our paid accounts.”

As such, users who would like to continue employing the “undo” feature are invited to upgrade to one of the two paid subscriptions to the Dropbox service. Currently, the free account offers 2 GB of space and, starting August, 30 days of “undo” support. For $99 a year, or $9.99 a month, Dropbox fans can upgrade to a 50 GB account, which preserves their files for an unlimited time. A $199 account is also purchasable, for a whopping 100 GB of storage.

Before you go, the Dropbox team would also like to inform you that its own iPhone client is just around the corner.

“In addition to this change to undo history, in the near future we'll be releasing our free iPhone app that will allow you to access your Dropbox on the go, view your files, save them to your phone, and even take photos that sync instantly to your Dropbox!,” the team promises. “We've received great feedback from many of our users and are working on a lot of the stuff you've been asking for. Stay tuned and happy Dropboxing,” the team concludes.
