A few new features to help you get more done on-the-go

Cloud users who rely on Dropbox to sync their files across platforms and get stuff done will be glad to learn that a new version of the iOS client application is available today with a bunch of new features.

You can now rename your stuff right from the app. It may not sound like much for non-users, but this new addition is massive if you ask any existing Dropbox fan. A “more actions” button is available when viewing files and Office documents can be edited from Dropbox now. More on each feature in part below.

Dropbox 3.6 for iOS: the full scoop

Probably the most important new addition in Dropbox 3.6 is the “more actions” button available next to the sharing icon in the upper right-hand corner. It opens a set of options to quickly do things that normally required web access, third-party apps, or involved more than one step.

Renaming files has been one of the top requests from users. You can do that now by choosing Rename from the more actions button. Folders can also be renamed by swiping to the right from the file list view to bring up the necessary option. On iPhones, the more actions button includes the full file name, file size, and other stuff.

The new toolbar is equally exciting. According to the developers, “Our new toolbar disappears (and reappears) as you need it, leaving valuable screen space for a full view into your photos or important files. Simply tap once anywhere within your photo or file to toggle between the toolbar and full screen.”

Office editing

This feature is mentioned as newly added in Dropbox, though it was announced last week. When viewing Office files (Word, PowerPoint, or Excel), Dropbox now pops up an edit button that lets you instantly open that file in your Office apps. Yes, you actually need the Microsoft apps installed on your iDevice for this feature to go into effect.

“Now it’s easy to work on the Office files you’ve stored in Dropbox even when you’re on the go — you can edit them from the Dropbox app, and access them directly from the Office apps,” the Dropbox team said last week.

The company promised that the new features would be made available on November 25 for both Android and iOS users. However, the update was only released today. Use Softpedia to download Dropbox for iOS and Dropbox for Android right now.
