The Dropbox developers have also made an April Fools' joke

Dropbox 2.7.48 experimental version, a client for an online service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere, has been released and is now available for testing.

The Dropbox developers are going forward with this experimental branch and it seems that there is no end to it. All the previous versions in the dev branch have brought something to the table and this update is no different.

The latest build of Dropbox, 2.7.48, is not a particular large one, but it’s definitely a lot more than what we had last week. It features a couple of fixes that are important in their own right, but also a surprise from the developers.

According to the changelog, an exception that occurred when manually configuring SOCKS5 proxy has been fixed, and a bug that occurred while setting up selective sync in pre-authorized installers has been fixed.

Now the surprise, which is actually a delayed April Fools' joke, is about a startup theme song. This is obviously fake and the Dropbox developers got some flak about making the joke too late. Others really wanted a startup sound.

Prompt to selective sync in the setup wizard for large Dropboxes – if your Dropbox is more than 6 GB or syncing your Dropbox would fill up most of your remaining hard disk space, we will prompt you to use selective sync to skip syncing some of your folders. Note that this prompt is skipped if you have previously linked this account, as we assume you'll have your selective sync settings from before.

The 2.7.x branch also comes with an interesting set of other major features and they have been promoted with each version. The Windows and Mac OS X platforms will feature Pore-authorized installers. This may not seem like much, but if you remember how Google Chrome is installed, you will know how this works. You just hit install and everything is put in place without any interference from the users.

Unfortunately, the Linux users will have a hard time trying this version. Even if there are a couple of links to the source packages, there are no binary packages.

Check out the official announcement for more details about this release. Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
