Dropbox 2.11.2, the experimental build of a client for an online service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere, has been released for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

The Dropbox client has received quite a lot of attention lately and its developers have finally managed to take a closer look at the Linux version of the client. It's been a long time since the UI has been improved on the open source platform, but the latest changes are more than surprising.

The interface of the client had been stuck in the past for ages, but Dropbox now features a rewritten UI (only available for Windows and Linux). The devs have switched to Qt and it seems that this is the general direction of other projects as well, like KDE and Ubuntu, just to name a couple of them.

According to the changelog, a number of UI fixes have been implemented for the setup wizard and splash screens. The developers say that “This UI rewrite helps us fix a large number of issues/glitches you have reported over the years, improve performance, support high DPI on Windows, a new setup wizard on Linux, and more! Much of our UI is still rough around the edges so expect to see some things looking not quite right. On Windows & Linux, due to the UI rewrite Dropbox does not currently work with accessibility technologies such as screen readers.”

Another interesting option that's now present in the experimental build of Dropbox and that will probably make it soon into the stable release as well is called “file identifiers.” The devs also explain that “file identifiers enable Dropbox to detect when files have been moved and renamed. In the future we'll be able to use this to improve features such as Previous versions. For now, this change should be invisible.”

Other changes implemented in this release include a fix for a crash that occurred after using the location changer, a new Linux headless setup flow, faster uploads for smaller files, new splash screens, and a number of smaller fixes and improvements.

As usual, the developers don't provide binary files for Dropbox and it might be a while until this release makes it into the repositories.

Check out the official announcement for more details about this release. Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
