Dropbox 2.10.2, a client for an online service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere, has been released for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

The Dropbox client is a very popular application on the Linux platform, but its developers don't seem to notice that. Most of the new versions ignore Linux users and focus mostly on the Windows and Mac OS clients, and this particular build is no different.

To be fair, some of the changes and improvements made over time in the 2.10.x branch also apply to Linux, but there is nothing targeted specifically for the users of the open source platform. Fortunately, not all is lost. The upcoming 2.11 branch will feature a new UI for Linux and Windows, so there could be some hope after all.

According to the changelog, an issue that was unlinking some users from the accounts has been fixed, and a number of smaller fixes have been implemented. The Dropbox developers didn't say how many people had been affected by this unlinking issue, but there must have been quite a few, otherwise they wouldn't have released an update for just a small problem.

Also, the 2.10.x branch of the application comes with a number of new features, such as streaming sync, a scrollable tray popup, better initial sync performance, a new over quota "Your Dropbox is full" screen, a new "Upgrade to Pro" screen, and the option to disable "Move to Dropbox" context menu.

"Streaming sync speeds up syncing for larger files. As a large file is uploaded to our servers, other desktop clients with access to that file will begin downloading the file in the background. This makes large files sync faster between your computers using the same Dropbox account as well as in shared folders," is noted in the changelog.

The developers have also explained that, in order to disable the "Move to Dropbox" context menu, users must quit Dropbox and then run this command in a terminal:

Windows:

code
%APPDATA%\Dropbox\bin\Dropbox –move-to-dropbox=False
Linux:
code
~/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd –move-to-dropbox=False
Mac OS X:
code
/Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox --move-to-dropbox=False
Linux users need to know that they don't have access to binary files of the latest Dropbox client, unlike the users of other operating systems. This means that you will only get the source package and you will have to compile it by yourself. The other solution is to wait until it gets integrated into the repositories.
