Dropbox is a very handy file sync tool which enables users to have their files at hand and up to date on any computer they use. The cross-platform app is under heavy development and the latest beta build has now been released. The Dropbox 0.8 line has been in the works for a few months now, but it’s getting close to completion. With Dropbox 0.8.89, the desktop client has lost its ‘experimental tag’ though it’s not ready yet to be deemed stable.

“Yet another bug fix release, we're still working on integrating selective sync into the tour so stay tuned! With this build we've removed the ‘experimental’ tagline so feel free to migrate to the new 0.8.x hotness. [Fixes in Dropbox] 0.8.89: - Fixed very rare bug that would case downloads to hang; - Lots of other small fixes,” the announcement on the Dropbox forums read.

The release itself is nothing revolutionary; it’s just an incremental update over the previous experimental builds. Most of the latest releases in the 0.8.x line have focused on bug fixing, a good indication that things are in the final lap. The focus now is on polishing the main new feature in Dropbox 0.8, the selective file syncing capability.

This feature enables users to sync just the files and folders they need on that particular computer making it possible to have different local files cached on different computers. This makes sense since most of the time you don’t need all of the files in your Dropbox account on any particular computer.

Dropbox also introduced an interesting new feature recently making it easier to share files and folders with friends. Any file and folder in your account can now be accessed through a direct link. The feature needs the Dropbox 0.8.x desktop client to work, but you can get the share link through the web interface as well.
