To be unveiled on June 23

June is rapidly becoming one of the hottest months of the year when it comes to the mobile space. The new iPhone 4 will go on sale on June 24, Samsung is set to announce a new handset for the US on June 29, and now Verizon and Motorola say they plan on unveiling the “next generation of Droid” on June 23. The best guess is that the Motorola Droid X should be brought to the spotlight on that day, especially since the device already got handled, and a series of live photos with it are now available.

The Motorola Droid X is a device that made it into the wild quite a few times before, along with another new Android-based handset from Motorola, the DROID 2. Previous rumors on its launch date suggested July, and recent reports say July 19. While no official announcement on the matter was made until now, the June 23 unveiling event suggests that the mobile phone would land on shelves soon after. Moreover, in case some might have doubted Droid X' existence, the hands-on photos and videos recently published on Engadget show that the device is real.

According to the news site, the Motorola Droid X can easily prove to be a “superphone or a mega-smartphone.” First of all, there is a 4.4-inch touchscreen display that boasts an FWVGA (854 x 480-pixel) resolution and which is said to be very responsive, making the device a worthy competitor against the HTC EVO 4G. The Droid X comes with physical buttons along the bottom of the screen, while running under Google's Android 2.1 operating system, with a new version of Motoblur.

On the back, the device sports an 8-megapixel photo snapper with 720p video recording capabilities. There is no physical keyboard included in the package, so one will have to go with the soft one, which might prove a great option, as Swype has been pre-loaded on the device. Overall, the phone is said to be quite fast, most probably courtesy of the rumored 1GHz ARMv7 processor. Users will benefit from 8GB of internal memory with the Droid X, most probably with the possibility to add more into the equation.
