Developers Puppygames (don't judge a book by its cover) have just made available the latest version of its retro arcade shooter, Droid Assault, for Mac. The shareware game resembles 8-bit classics such as Paradroid and Quazatron, in both looks and feel, but sports current-gen graphics and sound. Here's where you can grab the Mac version (shareware) of the game to install it on your computer right now.

Droid Assault harkens back to 1985 for its gameplay and style, with Puppygames' signature stylized retro graphics and superbly atmospheric sound effects, an official report notes. As you would imagine, players step into the shoes of a droid infiltrating the Omni-Corp warehouses, in which all of the battle droids have accidentally been switched on and are running amok. Destroying droids earns you transfer points, which then enables you to capture more droids using a transfer beam, or capture fixed gun turrets and turn them to your own advantage.

The player's eventual goal is to build up a small army to assist him in clearing out the factory warehouses. The droids you capture run off and start destroying enemies for you! Along the way, droids can be modified with an array of powerups and upgrades.

Droid Assault highlights, according to Puppygames themselves, include 50 different levels to blast through, 48 unique enemy robots to capture or destroy, 20 different weapons including disruptors, laser beams, rockets and flamethrowers, 17 powerups to augment and enhance your captured squad, 4 giant boss robots and an online hiscores table.

"We've been working our 'bots off this year to bring you Droid Assault - our latest retro shooter - a pixelly mashup of Ultratron and the Amiga classic Paradroid, caught in the middle of a Star Wars blaster battle!," the developers note on their website. Puppygames also mention that they currently have two other games in development. Those are Monster Mash and Treasure Tomb. We'll be tracking their progress to let you know the instant they become available.
