The market of handsets and smartphones is definitely wide and far-reaching, and makers of such devices often find that it is rewarding to play upon the trends and tastes of their customers, as is made obvious now that Verizon and Motorola are nearing the release of the Droid 2 R2-D2.

Star Wars fans will certainly know that, currently, the Star Wars-themed Celebration V convention is taking place in Orlando (lasts between August 12 and August 15).

It is there that people from around the world go to check out the newest in Star Wars-themed products and competitions.

Seeing the great potential for business that these die-hard fans possess, Verizon and Motorola have been working on the Droid 2 R2-D2 mobile electronic.

As its name suggests, the Droid 2 R2-D2 is a new smartphone modeled after the popular R2 unit that has actually become something of an icon.

R2-D2 is one of the only characters that was present in all six of the Star Wars films and has a significant fan base of its own, a fan base that the two companies seek to exploit.

Currently, this smartphone is reportedly on show at the convention and, according to a poster right next to the demo unit, fans won't have to wait very long before they can get one.

Basically, the Droid 2 R2-D2 will debut on September 30, which is about a month and a half from now.

This period will allow the hype to properly build up and should also give interested users enough time to save up for the purchase.

Predictably, the device is fully expected to cost somewhat more than the regular Droid 2, as is usual for all themed models of a certain electronic.

Unfortunately, Verizon and Motorola did the predictable thing and did not disclose the exact pricing details.
