Drew Barrymore’s style is often considered a miss in terms of meeting the fashionably acceptable, which is yet another fancy term for being misunderstood and not going mainstream. However, opinions about last night’s appearance at the 2009 Golden Globes, while still mixed, tend to incline that she had, for once, made a splashing entry on the red carpet.

Dressed in a flowing, off-the-shoulder, John Galliano for Dior gown that followed her body lines, only to end in a delicate ruffle that made her silhouette look more slender, the actress was quite a stunning presence on the red carpet. Lorraine Schwartz jewels matched the gray gown, both in tone and style, while a daring Rogier Vivier clutch, in bright red, offered a much needed and welcome contrasting note.

Drew stepped on the red carpet hand in hand with Jessica Lange, her co-star in the Kennedy-inspired story “Grey Gardens,” who kept it simple and chic with a low-cut black gown, matching shoes and clutch, and mysteriously – and somehow out of place – looking black shades.

Despite the fact that most fashion-oriented magazines have met Drew’s choice of a gown for what is the second most important ceremony in the entire year with wild applause, not few have been those who took it upon themselves to show the uneducated public the total lack of inspiration behind the entire outfit. Thus, from that to calling the actress a “hot mess” was nothing but a small step for many e-zines and gossip publications.

Although Drew certainly tried to go for old-school glamour with the ruffled hair with the roots showing, matched with gray makeup and natural looking lips, several bloggers took to the net to cry shame for the actress making a fool of herself by trying too much. Even her Marilyn Monroe-esque poses on the red carpet, in perfect accordance with her entire look for the night, have been deemed to be forced and, thus, completely unworthy of our attention.

Then again, this could very easily be just a matter of taste. So, have your say on Drew’s outfit at the Golden Globes below.
