When Beyonce released her fifth studio album, “Beyonce,” in the middle of the night without as much as an official announcement, let alone teasing and actual promotion for it, people rushed to say she was setting a precedent, starting a new trend, and in the process, influencing the way business was done in the industry.

Well, they can say that again, because it’s been happening since. The loudest and most recent example is the surprise release of Drake’s newest album, called “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.”

It is now available on iTunes and its release was announced, as you can see below, through a tweet that included nothing else besides a link and what I suspect is the official artwork for the cover.

Fans knew that he was cooking up something big for them, but they somehow got the idea that it would be a mixtape. Needless to say, an actual full album is considerably better than a mixtape, so no one is complaining.

The material includes collaborations with Lil Wayne, Travi$ Scott and PARTYNEXTDOOR and spans 17 tracks, many of which speak of Drake’s life and career so far, his way of dealing with the fame game, and how his music isn’t anchored in critics’ appreciations but the love for the fans.

He also takes a swipe at established industry awards and the media, saying this album was never made with the idea of pleasing either in mind.

Again, “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” is available on iTunes, so head over there to check it out, if Drake’s music is your cup of tea.
