DragonFly, a distribution that belongs to the same class of operating systems as other BSD-derived systems and UNIX, is now at version 3.6. DragonFly 3.6 is the biggest release for this distribution in a while. If previous versions were more like maintenance release, the new DragonFly is actually host to a myriad of new features and changes.

“Support for newer Intel and ATI chipsets is present in the system. This may not work for every hardware combination, but a number of users have reported success with hardware-accelerated video using this update,” reads the official announcement.

Other important changes have been implemented, such as SMP scaling improvements (which scale up with the number of cores in the system), Dports, which uses the FreeBSD ports system as a base, and the 'pkg' tools for installation, is now default on DragonFly, and locales and libiconv have brought up to date on language support.

“Two release options are now available for 32-bit as well as for 64-bit x86 machines. 64-bit installations are recommended if you do not need the Linux emulation layer. 32-bit images are only required by legacy, non-64-bit capable hardware such as early Pentium 4 or Athlon based machines,” is also stated in the release notes.

Highlights of DragonFly BSD 3.6:

• Drivers have been made to work correctly when using a bigger than 128KB maximum IO transfer size; • Support for memory page attributes has been added; • The cache invalidation functions have been enhanced; • Various advanced memory management functions have been implemented in the x86_64/amd64 64-bit kernel; • The special support for the Cyrix CPUs has been removed; • Support has been added for NVIDIA MCP79 AHCI controllers; • Multiple TX queue and RX queue support has been added in bnx(4).
