Square Enix has confirmed that it will require all those interested in playing Dragon Quest X on home consoles to have an Internet connection active while they engage with the video game.

An official statement from the publisher says that the first few hours of the game, which will presumably serve as the tutorial section, can be played without being connected to the Internet but also said that the rest requires a connection to the official servers of the company.

Some statements also suggest that players might have to pay in order to access all elements of the game.

Masashiro Sakurai, who is a designer working on Dragon Quest X, has said, “After hearing that it’s online, the number of people who say the classic style Dragon Quest would be better is probably not low.”

He added, “However, in a game industry where evolution and sudden changes are tolerated, even considered expected, just treading the same path would be be troubling. It’s being made by people who’ve made sound titles in the past, so I’m greatly looking forward to it.”

Square Enix has not yet clarified how much of the game will require other players to be completed.

The new Dragon Quest video game has been confirmed as arriving on the Nintendo Wii home console and will also get a version for the upcoming Wii U platform, although it is not clear whether that will be launched alongside the console or at a later date.

The Dragon Quest series will be also receiving a spin-off that will launch on the Nintendo 3DS handheld and Square Enix has also indicated that some versions of the game package will also include a NES version which will be offered on a memory stick for nostalgic fans.

The launch dates for all these games is set for 2012.
