The brand new cooperative multiplayer mode in Dragon Age: Inquisition will include 12 characters at launch and developer BioWare is adamant about including more after release via DLC packs.

BioWare surprised quite a few people yesterday when it confirmed that Dragon Age: Inquisition, its upcoming medieval fantasy role-playing game, would include an online co-op mode, separate from the single-player story but offering the same squad-based experience.

Now, more details are slowly trickling in about Inquisition's multiplayer, this time with info about the different characters included in the mode and how BioWare wants to expand their number via future updates.

Dragon Age: Inquisition's cooperative mode will have 12 characters in total, four for each class, and all representing different specializations inside them.

"Twelve characters, four for each class (warrior, rogue, and mage), will be available at launch. Characters from the same class can be very different," the studio explained in an official FAQ.

BioWare exemplified its statement with two different Warrior specializations – the Reaver and the Legionnaire. The Reaver is specialized in using two-handed weapons and dealing damage to foes as part of its general DPS (Damage-per-Second role). The Legionnaire, however, can use one-handed weapons and a shield, fulfilling more of a tank role by soaking up damage and even dealing a fair bit of punishment for enemies.

"The Legionnaire and the Reaver are both warriors, but depending on your party composition and your style, one may be more suitable than the other," the studio revealed.

Party composition is crucial in the cooperative mode, and new characters can be unlocked by either crafting their armor or attaining them via the chests. Levels will also feature hidden treasures that can be accessed by a certain class, so having at least one of each is crucial to earn all the rewards.

"In Dragon Age multiplayer, changing the party composition with new characters can be the difference between failing and succeeding. You can unlock new characters by crafting their armor. Crafting materials are acquired by salvaging items such as weapons and weapon mods."

"You may also get a new armor in a chest that you can buy with gold coins. Getting a new character is definitely a goal to be pursued on Dragon Age multiplayer."

BioWare also emphasizes that, while just 12 multiplayer characters are going to be included at launch, more will be released after the game's actual debut, much in the same way as the Mass Effect 3 co-op character roster was increased exponentially via DLC.

Inquisition is set to launch in November on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
