The release dates of Dragon Age 2 for North America and Europe were announced by BioWare, during EA's press briefing at Gamescom 2010. The announcement was accompanied by a cinematic trailer for the game entitled Destiny.

Dragon Age 2 will be released in North America on the 8th of March 2011 and in Europe on the 11th March 2011 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Mike Laidlaw, the lead designer of the series so far, was up on stage during Electronic Arts' event at this year's Gamescom and he talked about how Dragon Age 2 would retain the tactical gameplay that many gamers loved in the original release, but would also have a more fast paced combat.

His word were echoed by Mark Darrah, executive producer at BioWare, who said in a press release that, “With Dragon Age 2, we are building on the outstanding RPG fundamentals the original delivered while taking the franchise in a new direction with faster, more responsive combat that will allow players to think like a general, but fight like a Spartan.”

He continued to comment that, “We are giving the franchise’s gameplay a shot of adrenaline. We can’t wait to get the game in people’s hands so they can feel the difference.”

BioWare has been trying to quell the worries of fans about over-streamlining the game. Dragon Age: Origins had been welcomed by many old-school role playing fans for its fresh take-on the familiar gameplay of old-time behemoths like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale.

However, the team behind Dragon Age 2 has take some cues from the development of Mass Effect 2, as now players will not create their own characters from the many races of the game's universe, but will fill in the shoes of Hawke.

The character is a refugee who survives the destruction of his homeland and the game follows his story of becoming the Champion of Kirkwall, one of the most important figures in the history of Dragon Age's world.

I bet they took some elements of Demon's Souls, definitely can't go wrong there.
