uTorrent 2.2 has been released, the latest update to the very popular BitTorrent client. uTorrent 2.2 comes with a several big new features, chief among which is App Studio, a platform for JavaScript-based extensions and apps. It also comes with support for uTP, a new transfer protocol pioneered by the uTorrent team.

"We first introduced apps in a µTorrent beta this past spring... Now we are ready to launch the App Studio as a full feature to the entire µTorrent user base," BitTorrent, the company behind uTorrent, announced on its blog.

"We will always strive to maintain the lightweight and fast attributes of µTorrent. With the App Studio, we can introduce new features and direct access to unique content on an individual basis. You choose only the features and content you want, and we keep the core µTorrent as fast and powerful as ever," BitTorrent explains the appeal of the App Studio approach.

The team has been working on App Studio for the past few months and there are a number of applications and services available already, from Virus Guard by BitDefender - for the security conscious - to the VODO movie app and even games.

uTorrent 2.2 is the first stable release to incorporate the rather controversial uTP, an updated BitTorrent protocol designed to lower the burden on ISPs from P2P traffic in the hope that this will lead to faster speeds for everyone and less bandwidth throttling from the providers.

The latest stable release also brings better support for magnet links, a better file relocation feature that enables you to move downloaded files without breaking the torrent, and better privacy for UDP connections.

uTorrent 2.2 also comes bundled with Four Eyed Monsters, a 2005 drama which is being released for free via BitTorrent. The movie comes as an app in App Studio and will be available to a potential audience of over 80 million people, 65 million uTorrent users and another 15 million BitTorrent Mainline client users.
