Google has rolled out new versions of Chrome, their lightweight, WebKit based desktop web browser for Mac, Windows, and Linux. The Dev channel is now at version 9.0.597.19 for all platforms, whereas the Beta and Stable channels are now at version 8.0.552.224. Google said that its Chrome OS has also been updated.

“The Chrome Stable and Beta channels have been updated to 8.0.552.224 for all platforms,” Jason Kersey, of the Chrome development team, blogs for Google.

“Chrome OS has also been updated to 8.0.552.343,” he adds. “These releases contain the security fixes listed below, along with stability and other improvements,” the post reads.

Kersey’s post continues with a list of security fixes and their respective rewards,

“Please see the Chromium security page for more detail,” Kersey notes, adding that “the referenced bugs may be kept private until a majority of our users are up to date with the fix.”

As noted above, the Dev channel has also been updated. Version 9.0.597.19 “was primarily a crash fix release, in particular resolving a sync related crash issue,” according to Anthony Laforge, of the Google Chrome team.

As usual, the log of all revisions holds more details about additional changes.

Going by the progress made in the Dev channel, it will not be long before the Beta channel is updated with a 9.0 build of Chrome.

Google Chrome requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and an Intel-based Mac.

A note about Google Chrome release channels and updates

Chrome boasts a release system with three distinct channels: Stable, Beta, and Developer preview, called the "Dev" channel.

The Stable channel is updated with features and fixes only after they are thoroughly tested in the Beta channel, while the Beta channel is be updated with stable and complete features from the Dev channel, where ideas get tested.
