CNN has officially released its first iPad application which acts as a companion to the iPhone counterpart. The iPad version of the CNN App pretty much doubles the experience by including full-length articles, comments, slideshow support, and on-demand audio and video. The app is ad-supported.

“Experience the new CNN App for iPad. Share and comment on news & insights, watch live and breaking news video, and take yourself deeper into the stories,” the cable news channel says. “Welcome to the bigger picture.”

According to the broadcaster, the key features of CNN App for iPad are:

- Go beyond breaking news with top headlines, in-depth feature stories and video - Choose your view from different navigation options; quickly scan the headlines or immerse yourself in a slideshow - Take part in the conversation by commenting on stories and reading others’ responses - Share stories on Facebook and Twitter or via e-mail - Save stories for offline viewing - Watch live video streams of breaking news and other major news events.

Developed by CNN Interactive Group, Inc., CNN App for iPad was released December 14, 2010 as a 3.7 MB download with support for a single language - English.

The app is rated 12+ for the following:

- Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content or Nudity - Infrequent/Mild Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References - Infrequent/Mild Realistic Violence - Infrequent/Mild Mature/Suggestive Themes.

With other versions already available in the App Store, CNN App for iPad is only compatible with the Apple tablet. It requires iOS 3.2 or later.

CNN, sometimes referred to as CNN/U.S. to distinguish the American channel from its international counterpart, CNN International, is available in over 100 million U.S. households as of August 2010, reports indicate.

While the U.S broadcast is also shown in Canada, coverage extends to over 890,000 American hotel rooms. Globally, CNN programming airs through CNN International, which can be viewed in over 212 countries and territories.
