Alongside the release of Mac OS X 10.6 Build 10A411, Apple has reportedly seeded its iPhone developers with new betas of the iPhone OS 3.1 software, as well as the iPhone SDK for OS 3.1 Beta.

“With over 1,000 new APIs, iPhone SDK 3.0 provides developers with a range of new possibilities to enhance the functionality of their applications,” Apple says on its website. “New APIs also provide support for applications to communicate with hardware accessories attached to iPhone or iPod touch.” iPhone SDK 3.1 Beta 2 also includes these features.

Announcing the new beta release, Apple adds, “iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 2 and iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 are now posted to the iPhone Dev Center. These versions are for development and testing only and should be installed on devices dedicated to iPhone OS 3.1 beta software development. Please read the iPhone OS Pre-Install Advisory and the iPhone SDK 3.1 beta 2 release notes before downloading and installing. Use the Apple Bug Reporter if you discover compatibility or functionality issues while testing with the iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 release.”

Since Apple beta software are under the NDA (non disclosure agreement), developers cannot post the release notes for the new betas. However, the most visible / relevant changes are usually reported soon after the betas' release. For example, when Apple issued iPhone OS 3.1 Beta, developers quickly reported major changes like the ones listed below (via MacRumors).

- trimming video clips on the iPhone 3GS offers the ability to save the edited version as a copy rather than simply overwriting the original file; - Voice Control over Bluetooth available; - MMS enabled by default; - iPhone vibrates when rearranging Home screen icons; - a “Fraud Protection” toggle in Safari settings; - improved iPhone startup and loading times; - new APIs; - improved OpenGL and Quartz.

We'll be updating you with the changes discovered in iPhone OS and SDK 3.1 Beta 2 as soon as these are made public. In the meanwhile, developers can download the latest development resources from Apple using the link below. iPhone SDK 3.1 Beta 2 is only available to developers enrolled with Apple's Standard or Enterprise Developer Program.
