Apple has released version 2.0 of the iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac OS X and Windows. The software assists users in creating, maintaining, encrypting, and pushing configuration profiles, as well as in tracking and installing provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capturing device information including console logs.

“Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates that permit iPhone and iPod touch to work with your enterprise systems,” Apple explains. Interested parties can find instructions on how to use the iPhone Configuration Utility within the iPhone and iPod touch Enterprise Deployment Guide located here.

Not much is different on the Windows side. However, PC users do need to meet some requirements, including Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 with .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 with .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1. Either solution is suitable to run the iPhone Configuration Utility 2.0 for Windows. Those who want to download the .Net 3.5 Service Pack 1 installer straight away can do so by visiting the Windows maker here.

Apple also points out that there’s a Share button that allows Windows users of the utility to create an Outlook message with a configuration profile as an attachment. More options are available, Apple says.

I've been searching for several days for information on how to use the iphone configuration utility. Everyone says it's so easy to synch an iphone to exchange, but so far the only easy solution I've found is to pay some consultant $175 to solve the problem. I've exausted every tip and bit of advice found through google searches, but nothing so far has worked.

The configuration utility is the single worst piece of software I've ever seen presented to corporate users. It has no help, no examples, no discription of what the cryptic text boxes are really asking for.

What, for example, do they mean by activesynch host? Do they mean the url of the exchange server, the exchange server name, or what. Where is the place to put in the url? What if the server uses pop3 for normal mail pickup, but is configured to use SNTP for secure connections. The iPhone uses secure protocols, right? There's nothing in the instructions that mention ports 25 and 80, right?

So our email address points to our ISP's server, but our secure ports are available for the iPhone. this should work, right? So how do you configure the iPhone and how do you use the configuration utility?

And why does Apple suggest buying a certificate if it has the ability to load a self-signed certificate? Why alle the confusion and misdirection over this?
