A new version of the Apple TV software is available for download with quite a few noteworthy enhancements, including the ability to purchase TV show episodes directly from the device, access and stream any title previously purchased using the Apple ID, as well as Vimeo support.

Originally documented by John Gruber of Daring Fireball, the Apple TV 4.3 8F455 update now enables customers to buy their favorite episodes directly from the device.

Users can access and stream any TV show episodes previously purchased using the iTunes Store account that they use to access iTunes through the set-top box.

A listing for TV shows has been added to the “Purchased” tab. Users can now download previously purchased TV show episodes.

The update also adds support for Vimeo, the video-sharing website.

In addition to these enhancements, the following changes are listed by the folks at 9to5mac:

- Audio: Addresses an issue in which audio is not output when playing some video content.

- Video playback: Addresses an issue in which video is not displayed when playing some content.

- Audio output setting: Adds an audio output setting for switching to 16-bit audio for compatibility with some TVs and AV receivers.

- Live FF/RW improvements: Improves the performance of fast-forwarding and rewinding live events. - Movie description: Addresses an issue in which the description information is not displayed for some movies. - YouTube video order: Addresses an issue in which YouTube subscription videos were not ordered by date.

Apple TV Software 4.3 Build 8F455 is immediately available as a free download via the software update feature of the set-top box

Select Settings -> General using your Apple Remote, click Update Software, and click Download / Install to start the process.

Users should not attempt to disconnect their Apple TV during the installation of the update. During the update process, the Apple TV will restart, then display the Apple logo and status bar.
