VLC for Windows 8 is still in the works, so it could take a few more months until the app officially becomes available for users of Microsoft’s new operating system.

Until then, those who wish to play MKV or HD files in the Windows 8 Modern UI of either a desktop computer or a Windows RT tablet can give a shot to mobile.HD Media Player.

This application not only offers support for MKV files, but it can also handle subtitles, even though we’ve received reports that it’s a bit buggy when it comes to this particular feature.

An audio player is also integrated, in case you wish to listen to your own music and so is a playlist feature.

The app offers support for x86, x64 and ARM devices, so Surface RT owners can also install it.

The app comes with a price tag of $3.49 (€2.65), but a trial version is also available for free
