Microsoft has made available for download a set of free resources designed to help customers keep a close eye on the health of Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 components.

The Windows Storage Server Management Pack is now live on the Microsoft Download Center, but users will also need System Center Operations Manager 2007 in order to take advantage of the download.

The collection of management packs streamlines the monitoring of the Single Instance Storage (SIS) and Microsoft iSCSI Software Target components of the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2, the software giant informed.

The Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Monitoring Management Pack download is also accompanied by the documentation necessary to guide IT Professionals to the process of leveraging the resource.

“The Windows Storage Server Management Pack retrieves events and other health information generated by the services that run on Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 introduces additional features to the File Services role running on Windows Server,” Microsoft informs.

In fact, the Redmond company indicates that the management pack is set up to be used as a supplement to the Windows File Services Management Pack.

Released in 2010, the Windows File Services Management Pack offers monitoring capabilities for the File Server role of Windows Server 2008 R2.

According to the software giant, customers running either System Center Operations Manager 2007 SP1 or System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 will be able to use the Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Monitoring Management Pack.

“The Windows Storage Server Management Pack package includes the following files: Microsoft.Windows.FileServer.SIS.Library.mp, Microsoft.Windows.FileServer.SIS.2008R2.Library.mp, Microsoft.Windows.FileServer.iSCSITarget.Library.mp, and Microsoft.Windows.FileServer.iSCSITarget.2008R2.Library.mp,” Microsoft said.

Offered to customers earlier this week for the first time, the Monitoring Management Pack comes with support only for Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2008 R2 is not supported, Microsoft underlines.
