The March 2011 Security Release ISO Image is available for download from Microsoft, accompanying the release of this month’s patches through Windows Update. As usual, the ISO image packs the security updates offered by the Redmond company for the supported versions of the Windows operating systems.

Seeing how, patch-wise, March 2011 was a slow month for the software giant, with only three security bulletins offered to customers, it should be come as no surprise that the March 2011 Security Release ISO Image is also quite light.

In fact, the image contains only two security bulletins, MS11-015 and MS11-017, both of which impact Windows.

MS11-015 is designed to deal with two vulnerabilities, one in DirectShow and the other in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center.

At the same time, MS11-017 is set up to resolve a single vulnerability in Windows Remote Desktop Client.

The DVR-MS vulnerability in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center is the most severe out of the three security holes plugged this month by the Redmond company.

In addition, the DVR-MS flaw is also the reason why Microsoft has advised customers of making a priority out of the deployment of MS11-015.

Users running Windows 7 SP1 also need to apply MS11-015, since the DVR-MS vulnerability affects the copies of Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center built into the platform by default.

The March 2011 Security Release ISO Image is one way to access the patches, but it’s not intended for end users.

Even though quite light compared to other months, the patch package image still weighs in at 252.9MB, and this because it contains all the security updates for Windows but in all the languages supported for the OS.

The image is designed for IT administrators, but a better solution for them would be to just use a solution such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
