The August 2010 Security Release ISO Image is now available through the Microsoft Download Center, having been released concomitantly with this month’s security patches.

The ISO image is nothing short of a usual release for the Redmond company, which this month packages all the security updates for Windows offered via Windows Update on August 10th.

Earlier this week, the software giant started offering a record number of security bulletins for various products including Windows, Office and IE.

“As part of its routine monthly security update cycle, Microsoft is providing active security protections to help customers manage and prevent threats to their computing experience through the release of 14 security bulletins,” revealed Angela Gunn, Security Response Communications Manager, Microsoft.

“This month’s bulletin package includes eight Critical and six Important updates to address 34 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft XML Core Services and Server Message Block,” Gunn added.

No less than 12 of the August 2010 security bulletins impact Windows, and they have all been packaged into the ISO image.

IT admins that don’t have the option of leveraging an automated solution for deploying patches for Microsoft products, like Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)) can turn to the August 2010 Security Release ISO Image to grab multiple individual language versions of each security update.

Weighing in at over 4GB, this month’s Security Release ISO Image is quite a download, and administrators need to plan ahead.

Customers will undoubtedly observe that there are 13 security bulletins in the August 2010 Security Release ISO Image and not just 12.

In this regard, they need to remember that Microsoft released an out of band security update earlier this month packaging a Windows 0-day that was under attack in the wild.

MS10-046, the bulletin designed to patch the Windows Shell .LNK shortcut vulnerability has also been included into the August 2010 Security Release ISO Image
