Sure enough, Microsoft is hard at work building Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 7, but at the same time, the company is not neglecting its previous WM platforms. In this regard, it has made available for download an updated version of the software development kit designed to permit developers to build applications for Windows Mobile 5.0 running on Pocket PCs. Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC is up for grabs via the Microsoft Download Center since August 19, 2009.

“The Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK for Pocket PC extends Visual Studio 2005 so that you can write managed and native application software targeting Windows Mobile 5.0 based Pocket PC devices. This includes: Windows Mobile 5.0 based Pocket PC Device Emulator images & skin files; Headers, Libraries, IDL files, and Managed reference assemblies; Sample Code; Documentation in CHM Format; Tools, Sample Configuration files, and Test Authenticode Certificates,” Microsoft revealed.

Localized Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Emulator Images, while also available as standalone downloads, are integral components of the software development kit. The images are set up to offer developer Emulators for a variety of Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC localizations, in order to streamline the application testing process. The Redmond-based company has tailored the Emulator images to the following languages: CHS - Chinese : Simplified (PRC); CHT - Chinese : Traditional (Taiwan); CSY - Czech: Czech Republic; DAN - Danish: Denmark; ELL - Greek: Greece; ESN - Spanish: Spain (International Sort); FIN - Finnish: Finland; FRA - French: France; GER - German: Germany; ITA - Italian: Italy; JPN - Japanese: Japan; KOR - Korean (Extended Wansung): Korea; NLD - Dutch: Netherlands; NOR - Norwegian: Norway (Bokmal); PLK - Polish: Poland; PTB - Portuguese: Brazil; PTG - Portuguese: Portugal; RUS - Russian: Russia; and SVE - Swedish: Sweden.

“The Emulator Images enable you to test your applications for Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Pocket PC. These images can be used in conjunction with the Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Software Development Kit (SDK). The SDK includes an emulator that uses a virtual machine to run the full WM 5.0 Pocket PC independent of your main operating system on the same machine,” the software giant noted.
