Back in November 2010, Microsoft upgraded its free email service with full-session HTTPS encryption, and it’s now the turn of the company’s free email client to benefit from secure socket layers, or SSL.
The software giant has made available for download a new version of Windows Live Essentials 2011, Build 15.4.3538.0513, which contains updated variants of all the applications packed under this brand, including Windows Live Mail 2011.
With the introduction of the latest update, 15.4.3538.0513, Windows Live Mail 2011 has been refreshed to play nice with SSL, the Redmond company stressed.
For those not familiar with SSL, secure socket layers, just as Transport Layer Security (TLS) before it, is a cryptographic protocol designed to ensure that communications over the Internet are secure from eavesdropping and tampering.
This means that even if a potential attacker can intercept the users’ email traffic, it won’t do any good, since the data is encrypted, as long as customers are running Windows Live Mail 2011 15.4.3538.0513. The same is valid for Windows Live Hotmail which features not only SSL secure sign-in, but also full-session HTTPS encryption.
“This week, we will release an update to Windows Live Essentials 2011. In addition to changes that improve performance and quality of service, the update also includes full support for SSL in Windows Live Mail, and the latest Bing bar,” revealed
Arthur de Haan, Windows Live Test and Service Engineering.
Of course, the update is also designed to introduce additional enhancements to the email client, with a focus on kicking up a notch the user experience.
“We fixed a sorting issue in the Sent items folder and improved the upload reliability and instrumentation in Photo mail,” de Haan added.
Windows Live Essentials 2011 15.4.3538.0513, including the updated Windows Live Mail 2011 email client, is already available from the official Essentials hub as well as from the Microsoft Download Center.
