Microsoft has made available for download the Windows Server Protocols in conjunction with the Windows Communications Protocols. Both the Work Group Server Protocol Program (WSPP) and Microsoft Communications Protocol Program (MCPP) technical documentation are designed to be integrated with Windows distributed systems concepts, as well as already released standard specifications and network programming art. Via MCPP, Microsoft is offering the technical specifications for Microsoft proprietary protocols designed to bridge Windows client operating system
with Windows server platforms. The protocols are an integral part of products, starting with Windows 2000 Professional and ending with Windows Vista, and are set up to permit interoperability by default with Windows NT 3.1 through Windows Server 2008.

"The MCPP technical documentation set provides detailed technical specifications for Microsoft proprietary protocols (including extensions to industry-standard or other published protocols) that are implemented and used in Windows client operating systems (namely Windows 2000 Professional and successors up to and including Windows Vista) to interoperate or communicate natively with Windows Server operating systems (namely Windows NT 3.1 up to and including Windows Server 2008). The documentation set includes a set of companion overview and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with conceptual background, overviews of inter-protocol relationships and interactions, and technical reference information, such as common data types and error codes," reads the overview provided by Microsoft with the Windows Communication Protocols (MCPP).

Microsoft is also offering the technical specifications for the proprietary protocols integrated into Windows Server work group server operating system software. The resources are designed to offer details on the protocols used by Windows work group networks for file & print and user & group administration services.

"The scope of communications covered by this technical documentation set includes all protocols implemented and used in Windows Work Group Server Operating Systems (namely Windows NT Server 4.0, Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, and Windows Server 2008) to provide file & print and user & group administration services to Windows client operating systems (namely Windows 98 and successors up to and including Windows Vista) and other Windows Work Group Server Operating Systems," Microsoft added.
