In May 2009, Microsoft delivered the Release Candidate Build of the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7, on the heels of the Build 7100 RC development milestone. With Windows 7 RTM’d on July 22nd, 2009, the Redmond company has now also finalized the
Remote Server Administration Tools. As of August 11, 2009, the RTM version of the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 is available for download from Microsoft. The tools are designed to allow administrators to perform management tasks for not only roles, but also features of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 machines from remote computers with Windows 7.
“It includes support for remote management of computers that are running either the Server Core or full installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2, and for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008. Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003 can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7, although the Server Core installation option is not available with the Windows Server 2003 operating system,” revealed Microsoft Evangelist

Microsoft explained that the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 could only be installed on specific editions of the latest iteration of the Windows client. In this regard, the Redmond company pointed out that only the Enterprise, Professional, or Ultimate editions of Windows 7 were supported by the tools. At the same time, users will have to limit themselves to a single copy of the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 per computer. The software giant advised customers to remove all copies of Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 installed before deploying the RTM build.
“Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 runs on both x86- and x64-based editions of Windows 7, and can be used to manage roles and features that are running on either the Server Core or full installation options of the x64-based Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system. Remote management is also supported for some roles and features that run on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003,” the company said. “Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 should not be installed on a computer that is running the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack or Windows 2000 Server Administration Tools Pack. Remove all versions of Administration Tools Pack or Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows Vista SP1 from the computer before you install Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7.”
