Facebook-owned WhatsApp Inc. has rolled out a fresh new update for avid users of its IM chatting client, WhatsApp Messenger 2.11.8, adding a range of new wallpapers, new settings to make people feel more secure, and some assorted bug fixes.

WhatsApp Messenger version 2.11.8 is a free update, as is the app itself. Although the IM chatting client is now owned by social networking giant Facebook (following a very costly acquisition), WhatsApp remains a standalone app available in the iTunes App Store.

Unlike other IM apps, the iOS installment of WhatsApp is only available on iPhones and does not work on iPod touch devices or iPads. The service, however, is available on a lot of other platforms, including Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, Nokia phones, etc.

Version 2.11.8 is out today with a range of new features that will delight everyone. There are some new wallpapers offered with this release, and people who care a lot about their privacy are offered some new settings at Settings > Account > Privacy. A slew of bug fixes are also included in this update.

WhatsApp Messenger continues to support more than a dozen different languages and only requires iOS 4.3 to run on your handset. Hardware compatibility starts at iPhone 3GS. Download WhatsApp Messenger 2.11.8 for your iPhone and try out these changes today.
