Developed by Blizzard Entertainment
(the maker of World of Warcraft
), Warcraft III is an RTS game for Mac and PC that contains four playable races: Humans and Orcs, and the Night Elves and Undead. The former have previously appeared in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, while the latter are new to the Warcraft mythos.
The single-player campaign in Warcraft III is laid out similarly to that of StarCraft, being told through all four of the game's races in a progressive manner. A multiplayer mode is also available. Recently, Warcraft III Mac gamers have been treated to an alpha release of the 1.24 patch fixing an exploit related to unsafe type casting that allowed users to execute arbitrary code in maps, and other issues. Warcraft III Patch 1.24b is now available for Mac OS X.
Mac users who only have Reign of Chaos installed will only need to download and run the Reign of Chaos Patch. Those who have the Frozen Throne expansion pack installed as well will only need the Frozen Throne patch. Blizzard also asks gamers to note that, if their copy of Warcraft III is already patched to version 1.23, they will only have to install the upgrade patch version 1.24.
Users can verify their current version by launching the title and looking at the bottom right-hand corner of the startup screen. Those who have recently installed / reinstalled the game or have not patched Warcraft III in a long time will need to download and install the full 1.24 Universal Patch, according to Blizzard.
Blizzard also posts a note for Macintosh users saying that, “This patch file version is a .zip file which you will need to extract in order to install. Most Macintosh Operating Systems will automatically extract the patch file. For any player who it does not automaticaly [sic.] extract it for; you can download a program, such as StuffIt Expander 12.0.1, which will extract the file for you.”
