Visual Studio Lab Management 2010 has been updated to Release Candidate stage along with the rest of Microsoft’s developer platform and tools. Early adopters were offered Visual Studio Lab Management 2010 in 2009, and allowed to test the integrated solution, set up to streamline virtualization for application lifecycle management. With the Beta 2 Build delivered in November 2009, Microsoft is now offering customers the RC milestone of the product.

Furthermore, the Redmond company has worked to simplify the testing process as much as possible. Customers will be able to grab VHD Test Drive - Visual Studio Lab Management 2010 RC from the Microsoft Download Center, and start testing immediately, without all the hassles associated with deployment and configuration.

“Visual Studio Lab Management 2010 enables teams to accelerate setup/tear down and restoration of complex virtual environments to a known state for test execution and build automation. It extends build automation by automating virtual machine provisioning, build deployment and build verification in an integrated manner. It also allows testers to file rich bugs with links to environment checkpoints that developers can use to recreate complex environments, effectively reducing wasted time and resources in your development and test lifecycle,” Microsoft explained.

According to Microsoft, VHD Test Drive - Visual Studio Lab Management 2010 RC is designed to play nice with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Obviously, the Virtual Hard Disk image needs to be run on top of the hypervisor role Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2. Testers need to know that the UserName is Labdomain\tfsadmin and the password: Password~1. Entire VHD weights no less than 9.6 GB, so testers should plan ahead. Still, Microsoft has simplified the downloading process by breaking up the image into 14 archives.
