Microsoft is increasingly gearing up for the availability of the first service pack for Windows Vista. But at the same time, even with the close proximity of Vista SP1 RTM, the Redmond company continues to serve bits and pieces of the service pack via Windows Update. Even as Vista hit the shelves, the relevance of the service pack updating model began being downplayed, with the focus beginning to shift on WU.

On January 8th, 2008, as an integer part of the company's monthly patch cycles, two crumbs of Vista SP1 were made available in advance. "Tuesday 8 January, we are releasing several
non-security update packages via Windows Update. The updates include the regular monthly Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Mail Junk Mail Filter, two updates in our regular series of Windows Vista updates (KB943302 for application compatibility and KB943899 for reliability and performance)", revealed Nick White, Microsoft Product Manager.

Although both updates will be made a part of SP1, and despite the fact that Vista users now have access to the first release candidate of Vista SP1, Microsoft is not letting users of the operating system wait any longer, refreshing the compatibility, performance, responsiveness, and reliability of the operating system.

First off, Microsoft will serve the December 2007 Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update, resolving some of the most common issues encountered by users when integrating third party software into Vista. The Vista application compatibility update is available here for 32-bit editions of the platform and here for 64-bit. Additionally, KB 943302 provides an extensive list of all the software affected by the update.

Starting on January, Vista users can also access a performance, responsiveness, and reliability update for Vista. The refresh is designed to resolve a few issues, such as Stop errors associated with Vista coming back from standby, or hibernate mode. On top of this, Microsoft is offering a fix for scenarios in which the disk will no longer spin after prolonged periods of inactivity of the operating system. The update is available for 32-bit and 64-bit Vista.

Some caution is called for.

I applied today's updates to Vista64 Ultimate this morning on a high-end machine that had been running fine. Got *extremely* long "Windows is installing updates" and "Shutting down" times - over an hour before I hit a hard power off on the latter.

On restart, I started Windows normally when offered the chance. "Windows is configuring updates" took about 20 minutes but did get to a logon screen. But there were obvious mouse-hesitation problems, and it spontaneously started a shutdown a few minutes into the session. After over two hours of "Windows is shutting down", I forced it off again.

On the next restart I also started Windows normally (faster than before but still slow -- albeit no "Windows is configuring" stage) it came up ok and Windows Update showed that 943899 - the reliability update - had not installed.

So, I started *that* update's install again from scratch and its now going through the same rigamarole at shut down - 20 minutes of "...is installing updates" and now another hour or so of "is shutting down" has passed so far. Not a big update, not a slow machine, no pre-existing issues!

Could be the patch will come up fine if I force power-off, and the shutdown problem is novel and unrelated. But it's more likely they are related, and shutdown will never happen, and the patch will never fully install unless shutdown happens. Catch-22.

Be careful out there.
