The VLC media player is now available on Apple's App Store, according to the people who ported the software to iOS. Currently available only to iPad owners, the software is free to download and use.

“After 2 weeks of review, VLC for the iPad is eventually available on the AppStore!”, reads an announcement posted at Applidium.

“The release date is set to Tuesday, Sept. 21, so depending on your timezone, it should be available pretty soon. For instance, it’s already available in New-Zealand! Just follow this iTunes link that should become active as soon as the app reaches your store,” the developer says.

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files and various streaming protocols.

The player has numerous built-in codecs, making it suitable for pretty-much every video format out there.

According to the people who coded the iOS version, this installment retains VLC’s ability to play damaged media.

“Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that's still intact,” the app’s description reveals.

Applidium claims to have received many questions regarding an iPhone version of the VLC player.

According to the developer, “It’s in the works! We started with the iPad, but an iPhone and iPod version is coming,” it notes.

“We’d also like to thank the VideoLAN team which has been very, very helping and supportive, as well as all of you who sent us nice messages on twitter and by email,” the developer adds.
