The iOS version of VLC Media Player is now officially available for iPhone as well, in addition to being supported on the iPad. Version 1.1.0 also adds the ability to delete files from the application, more supported extensions, and much faster decoding, the makers say.

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files and various streaming protocols.

The software has numerous built-in codecs, making it suitable for pretty-much every video format available.

Originally, the iOS port of VLC Player was only available for iPad owners.

Now, thanks to the enhancements implemented in version 1.1.0, developer Applidium is proud to confirm that VLC Media Player now works on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and new-generation iPod touches, although it fails to specify exactly which iPod models are supported.

The official release notes (as posted on the app’s iTunes App Store page) can be found below.

What's New in Version 1.1.0

This new version of VLC brings : - Runs on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the recent iPod touches - You can now delete files from the application, without having to go through iTunes - Many more extensions are being recognized. - Much faster decoding thanks to assembly optimizations

According to the people who coded the iOS version of VLC Media Player, this installment retains VLC’s ability to play damaged media.

“Missing or broken pieces are no stop to VLC, it plays all the video and audio information that's still intact,” says Applidium.

Submitted in the Entertainment category of iOS apps, VLC Media Player is iOS 4.0 tested, weighs in at 8.8 MB, supports English only, and is rated 4+.
