VideoLAN has announced a new version of its popular media playing application, VLC Media Player. Available for all supported platforms, including Mac, VLC 1.1.10.1 delivers improved media key handling, various crash fixes, an update to the external library modplug, and some translation updates.

For both Windows and Mac OS X, VideoLAN developers mention an update of the external library modplug, to address multiple security issues.

On the Mac front only, interface tweaks are mentioned. The code-savvy people at VideoLAN have improved Media Key handling based upon SPMediaKeyTap by Spotify AB, and implemented some fixes for various crashes and small issues.

Other changes are listed as follows:

Demuxer:  · Fix heap corruption / integer overflow in XSPF playlist parser

Audio output:  · PulseAudio output re-written due to unstability of the current one

Win32 port:  · Remove the fontconfig dependency from the freetype module

Miscellaneous fixes in:  · Windows 7 taskbar buttons  · Qt interface  · asx, live555, dvdnav demuxer  · RTP output and XML export  · Subtitles colours when using GPU decoding on Windows  · v4l2 access

It appears that VLC developers have listened closely to their user base and heard their demands about certain language translations that didn’t quite cut it for them.

As such, VideoLAN introduced new localizations in LC Media Player 1.1.10.1 which, on all supported platforms, brings updates for Norwegian Bokmal, Slovak, Afrikaans, Luganda, Brazillian Portuguese, Irish, Thai, Estonian, Chinese, Polish, Dutch, German, Galician, Bulgarian, Lithuanian and Japanese translations.

The release incorporates initial Basque, Zulu, Peul, Amharic, Acoli, Chiga translations as well, according to the release notes.

VLC is a free and open-source media player and multimedia framework developed by a group called the VideoLAN project.

The app is a cross-platform effort. It comes in multiple versions for Mac OX , Windows, GNU, Linux, BeOS, BSD, and eComStation and was once available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
