Adobe Systems has just updated some of its products, and Mac users out there can now download the new flavors of Adobe Flash Player, which reached version 10.0.32.18, and Adobe AIR, which is now at version 1.5.2. The Adobe Flash Player, in case you didn't know already, enables users to view rich web content, including designs, animation and application user interfaces, regardless of the browser used for navigation. As for Adobe AIR, it is a cross-operating system runtime that enables developers to work on rich Internet applications (RIAs) based on Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript or Ajax.

According to Adobe, the new versions of Flash Player and Adobe AIR are mainly meant to patch a series of vulnerabilities that have been discovered with the Flash Player. “These vulnerabilities could cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system,” the company states, while also announcing that it would affect Mac systems, along with Windows and Linux ones. These updates are also expected to be followed by new versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat v9.1.2 for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX.

The update for Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR, the company says, resolves the privilege escalation vulnerability, the heap overflow vulnerability, the null pointer vulnerability, the URL parsing heap overflow vulnerability, the integer overflow vulnerability and the stack overflow vulnerability that could potentially lead to code execution, as well as a clickjacking vulnerability that could enable an attacker “to lure a web browser user into unknowingly clicking on a link or dialog,” as well as “a local sandbox vulnerability that could potentially lead to information disclosure when SWFs are saved to the hard drive.”

Adobe says that the new update is critical, and that all those who are currently using Adobe Flash Player v9.0.159.0 and v10.0.22.87 on either Macintosh, Windows or Linux machines should update immediately to Adobe Flash Player 9.0.246.0 and 10.0.32.18. At the same time, users running Adobe AIR version 1.5.1 or earlier should update to Adobe AIR 1.5.2, the company recommends.
