Transmission, a BitTorrent client similar to Vuze, or uTorrent, has been updated to version 1.75 final. Transmission is open source, while most of the code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, with select code licensed under the liberal MIT License. The program boasts a simple, intuitive interface designed to integrate tightly with any OS.

Supported by developer Eric Petit, Transmission runs natively on Mac OS X, seamlessly configuring your network, banning peers who send corrupted data intelligently, using protocol encryption and built-in Peer Exchange. It also allows you to efficiently ration commodity, only slowing down your system when you actually focus on it.

The latest version of the software doesn’t wait so long on unresponsive trackers, if there are other trackers to try, and doesn’t crash upon being fed corrupt/invalid torrents. Faster verification of local data for torrents with a small piece size has been confirmed by Petit, as well as the ability to handle HTTP redirects more gracefully.

Mac-specific changes include a mere two-bug fixes, one for a libcurl build issue that caused tracker connectivity problems on Snow Leopard, the other being an error when creating a torrent file while still changing the announce address. Other fixes include:

· Fix "sort by time remaining;" · Fix the turtle toggle button on old versions of GTK+; · Fix startup error if another copy of the Transmission GTK client is running; · Fix clang build issue; · Fix 1.74 bug that caused a high CPU load on startup; · Fix 1.74 bug that stopped multitracker if a single tracker sent an error message; · Fix bug in converting other charsets to UTF-8; · Fix 1.74 build error when compiling without DHT.

Transmission is free to download and use on any machine running Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later. The latest Tiger-supported version of Transmission, as well as a Panther supported version can be found here. The program is a Universal Binary, good for both Intel and PowerPC Macs. The BitTorrent client is now 64-bit compatible as well, allowing it to run on Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode. Use the link below to download the latest version of the software.
