Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion creator Ron Gilbert, and Double Fine Productions have announced The Cave for Mac OS X. The adventure game is immediately available for download via Steam.

The Cave is a new adventure game where you assemble a team of three (from seven) “unlikely adventurers [to] descend into the mysterious depths to explore locations including a subterranean amusement park and a medieval castle, not to mention a fully armed and ready-to-launch nuclear tipped ICBM.”

Each character has his/her own unique personality and story, which means you’re in for quite a few hours of gameplay.

Speaking of which, the game system has players switching between the three characters (who cooperate with each other) to solve puzzles. The reason is to learn why they’re all here in the cave.

Players also get to adventure in local co-op. When you finish the game with a set of characters, you can select another three for a totally different story.

“Unlock all the secrets of the cave – Replay the adventure with a new set of characters for a whole different experience including unique story, puzzles and areas of The Cave, plus hidden treasures (not redeemable for cash) and collectables,” according to the developers.

Don’t be fooled by the 2D-styled graphics because this game needs 512MB of video RAM to run smoothly and 4GB of memory. The minimum OS requirement is Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). An Intel Core Duo processor is also required.

You can also play the game with just 256MB of VRAM and 2GB of memory, but it might not look as great. Also note that OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is not supported. With that in mind, you can now hit Steam and download the game for your Mac.
