Minutes ago, Skype Software announced what it called a “significant update” to their Mac client.

Skype for Mac 5.4 Beta introduces the same Facebook integration found in Skype 5.5 for Windows.

According to a blog post signed Krishna Panicker, Product Manager, Mac users will now be able to chat with their Facebook friends, update their Facebook newsfeed, comment, as well as like their friends’ updates.

“You may have noticed that we now release updates for Skype for Mac quicker than ever before,” Panicker writes. “We've released a number of updates in 2011 which included, amongst other features, a brand new interface, video call control bar and HD-quality video calling.”

“Today we're launching Skype 5.4 for Mac Beta,” he proudly states. “The launch introduces the same Facebook integration found in Skype 5.5 for Windows. We are excited to finally deliver Facebook integration to our Mac users.”

“Just like in our Windows client, you will now be able to IM and connect with your Facebook friends without leaving Skype,” Panicker confirms.

In order to connect to Facebook, users will need to first sign into Skype, then click on the Connect to Facebook tab, and finally enter their Facebook credentials.

That’s not all, though. Skype is also introducing an advertising platform in this beta version of the software.

Those who pay for their Skype services will not be nagged by them, only free users will.

Panicker ‘kindly’ asks Mac users to consider downloading and trying out Skype 5.4 for Mac OS X Beta “to experience all that Skype for Mac has to offer.”

Earlier this month, we reported that Skype had introduced a hot fix in a new version of Skype for Mac addressing some crashing calls and a bunch of issues with the Norwegian installment. The new beta release incorporates those fixes, and many others.
