A new flavor of the Skype application is now available for download for devices running under Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system, namely version 2.5.0.135.

The new app release arrives on handsets with various performance and reliability enhancements, as well as with other changes.

As Skype notes in a recent post on their blog, the main difference between the new version of the application and the previous release is the fact that it has message notifications for Messenger buddies turned on by default.

The release notes of the new application include:

- Stability - Skype crashing on startup for some users who signed in with Microsoft Account - Notifications - Message notifications sometimes had contact names separated with 20% instead of space - Calling - Video call button was disabled straight after accepting incoming contact request - Video Calling - Full screen local video preview was stretched sometimes - Video Calling - Incoming 720p video on portrait mode was zoomed in.

Unfortunately, there still are a series of issues that the new Skype 2.5 for Windows Phone packs inside, including one affecting the audio on Windows Phone 8X by HTC devices.

However, the problem will affect only devices that haven’t been upgraded to the latest firmware available for them, it seems. Installing that firmware update will resolve the issue, Skype notes.

“Users on HTC 8X who have not updated their phone to latest firmware will experience muted microphone on audio calls,” Skype explains in said blog post.

Skype 2.5 for Windows Phone 8 is available for download for free, enabling chatting with friends over 3G and Wi-Fi, though using it over a mobile network might result in carrier charges. Owners of Windows Phone 7.5 devices can also take advantage of the benefits that this VoIP application has to offer to them.
