Two weeks into the release of their native iPad client, the folks at Skype are announcing their first software update dedicated specifically to the tablet version of their software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet.

“Bring your Skype contacts closer with full screen video at your fingertips,” reads the official description of the Skype iPad application.

“Beautiful and simple, this is Skype built especially for the iPad. Call, video call, or instant message anyone on Skype. Plus, if you add a little Skype Credit, call landlines and mobiles at really low rates,” Skype says on the iTunes App Store.

The changelog posted on Apple’s digital distribution platform differs greatly from the one released through the Skype Garage blog.

On iTunes, Skype 1.0.1538 for iPad is said to be tasked with fixing a bug to restore the left hand navigation panel.

However, Beom Soo Park blogging for the Belgian software company reveals that there’s much more to this release than meets the eye.

According to the man, the Chat segment of the application is suffering from an issue where a full-screen chat windows appears and the left hand navigation panel disappears.

Park’s post suggests the latest Skype for iPad release will fix this.

On the Video side, some users may experience a black screen on Topaz when making Skype Video Call between Apple/iPad and Palm/Topaz.

As with the previous bug, this issue should also be addressed by the latest Skype update.

Skype Software S.a.r.l has not changed the limitations and system requirements for their two iOS applications - for iPad and iPhone & iPod touch. These are presented as follows:

• Skype video calling requires iOS 4.0 or above.
• Send and receive video using front or back camera on iPhone 4, iPad 2nd Generation, and iPod touch 4th Generation.
• Send and receive video using rear camera on iPhone 3GS.
• Receive video only on iPad 1st Generation and iPod touch 3rd Generation.
• Works with any H264 compatible devices, including TVs.

September 29, 2011 / Hello / I use Skype for iPad to make long distance interview audio recordings on my iPad. The prior Skype for iPad version allowed Skype to run in the background while recording the audio with a separate audio record app on an iPad. The latest Skype for iPhone v. 3.5.117 / Skype for iPad v. 3.5.118 both no longer allow Skype audio to continue to run in the background when a separate Audio Record App starts recording. A Skype notice window informs me that Skype Audio has been stopped because another Audio Recording App has started. Thus, the new Skype for iPad version has eliminated the ability to audio record a Skype call on an iPad. It may be deliberate, due to the Skype notice window. Thus, the new Skype for iPad version is no longer useful for making long distance Skype audio recordings.
